Manufacturing of Aluminum Extrusion Die

Based on the 3D model of the extrusion die, the die is made using CNC.

The steps of making an extrusion die after design are:

Raw Material Selection: The choice of steel type and alloy depends on the type of operation, extrusion press conditions, and the type and section of the aluminum profile. For die making, steel with ASTM standard with code 2344-1 is used. In the Iranian market, there are two types of Swedish UDEHOULM company with the trade name ASSAB and German Bohler company with w300 code, and from domestic manufacturers, Isfahan Alloy Steel Company and Esfarayen Steel Company are available.

Machining: The aluminum extrusion die is made through a complex and very sensitive process using machining tools such as milling machines, lathes, and CNC machines.

Heat Treatment: After machining, the die is hardened using special furnaces through a process of increasing and decreasing temperature. This process is done to increase the hardness and strength of the steel and can be measured by a hardness tester.

Quality Testing: During this process, the die is tested to ensure that the design is accurate and correct and the die output is of good quality.

Extrusion Die Life

The extrusion die, due to high pressure, high temperature, and high friction in the extrusion press machine and during the extrusion process, must be made of a very resistant steel alloy, which is usually made of H13 steel for resistance to harsh conditions and high pressure up to 15,000 tons, which can be created in the extrusion process, also due to durability and increased die life.

Increasing the durability and lifespan of the extrusion die depends on 1- In the manufacturing stage, the type of steel used in making the die, accurate die design and the use of modern tools and machines, standard heat treatment of the die 2- During the use of the die, adjusting the required press pressure, lubricating the die after each use, nitriding the die.

On average, the amount of aluminum profile production from each die during the life of the die is approximately 15 tons.

Methods of Making Extrusion Dies

The manufacturing of aluminum extrusion dies is selected from different methods based on the cases and conditions.

CNC (Computer Numerical Control) Machining: This method is very accurate and is more popular due to better results. In this method, using drawings and 3D models, CNC machines can make very complex and accurate dies.

Milling: In this method, the die is made using machining machines and milling cutters based on the drawing and 3D model. This method is suitable for making aluminum profile dies with medium complexity.

EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining): In this method, the shape of the die parts is formed using electric current based on the drawing. This method is especially suitable for making dies with high complexity and precise details.
